Our prestigious barrel lots going under the hammer

This year’s Cape Wine Auction sees the introduction of auction lots comprising single-barrel wines from ten (my last count) leading South African producers. Each producer has selected one barrel – amounting to 300 bottles – of wine from their respective cellars for donation to the Cape Wine Auction. The treasured contents of these barrels were bottled under a unique Cape Wine Auction label, presented for the first time this year, bearing the producer’s name, the specific wine as well as the vintage.

DeMorgenzon Reserve Syrah 2022

  • Wine of Origin: Stellenbosch
  • Varietal: Syrah

This unique wine is made from a special block of Syrah on De Morgenzon, that is produced in support of the Cape Wine Auction to improve and secure the future of our youth in and around the Cape Winelands. This single barrel was selected by Wendy Appelbaum and cellarmaster Alastair Rimmer as it showed an alluring bouquet followed intense wild fruit and pepper on the palate. A dense yet svelte tannin structure backed this up and gives great length to the wine and ensures it will age beautifully, to those that are patient enough to mature it, for a decade or more!
